“The Ribbon” is a short-movie project by an aspiring young director Pandu Birantoro, made for a film-festival in Canada. Featuring Indri Sriwattana and Shalvynne Chang, two promising undiscovered talents. The plot tells about the tension and inhibitions of a forbidden love set in the 1940’s Asia. The screenplay manage to be tasteful and not vulgar, despite its depiction of a controversial theme.
The movie is rather “uncompromising” for local culture, not likely to screen at local public theatres. The soundtrack will be a myspace-only free-download and might not be performed or distributed in any other way (except in the movie, of course). However, plans on a director’s cut video-clip have been discussed.
A little different than the Delta-Blues, Adrian ventures on different styles of music. “The Promise” is ‘crooner’-style song with vocals performed by Aris Sidharta, a documentary-director/former theatre-practicioner. Done confidently in the style of the old masters, Aris’ voice is the perfect candidate. The music is to be featured on a scene where an old phonograph is playing in the background. Adrian’s simple approach of piano and strings helps in creating a period-correct atmosphere.
“Doubtfulness” is a piece to accompany a scene featuring a lot of silent-tension and attraction. Adrian has chosen to use his expertise in slide-guitar playing to convey the feeling, while illustrating the setting in an appropriate oriental-influenced tune.
“Love In A Blue Sky” was specifically commissioned as a piece of relieve music. Here’s where inhibitions are gone and freewill prevails. The song is a soothing pop ballad performed by Fe Utomo, former lead singer of the famed duo ‘Jingga’. Her voice is frail but graceful. Underneath, the music is played by Adrian on all instruments, conjuring intoxicating sounds and tone.
